Dalai Lama & Scientists At Mind & Life Institute Conference
Johns Hopkins & Georgetown co-Host As Georgetown Awards CME Credits
WASHINGTON, Sept. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- The Dalai Lama and top scientists will shed light on an emerging area of science as they participate in "Mind & Life XIII: The Science and Clinical Applications of Meditation," discussing topics ranging from scientific studies to contemplative perspectives.
Held November 8-10 in Washington D.C. at DAR Constitution Hall, the Mind and Life Institute with Johns Hopkins Medical Center is presenting the Georgetown University Medical Center-sponsored conference through which the Georgetown University Hospital is offering 12-1/2 credits to medical professionals attending through its Continuing Medical Education (CME) program.
With acclaimed speakers from the scientific and contemplative communities, the conference will be in dialogue format. The subject matter and presentation will intrigue medical and science professionals as well as the general public. The forum will detail breakthrough research efforts on the role of meditation in maintaining a healthy mind.
Adam Engle, Chairman and co-founder with the Dalai Lama of the Mind and Life Institute, said, "Meditation is being used in some treatment of stress, pain and other chronic diseases, but applications have only touched the surface. The Mind and Life conference will make a major stride building on the growing interest in meditation in medicine and biomedical science."
The November meeting will be the second public dialogue with the Dalai Lama. The previous 11 private conferences were in India, Europe and the U.S. since 1987 and seven books have been published about those discussions. In 2003, The McGovern Institute at MIT co-sponsored the first public meeting, held at MIT.

Engle said, "With sophisticated brain imaging technology, science investigating the brain and mind is growing exponentially and is where genomic research was decades ago. The potential applications for the benefit of mankind are plentiful."
The Mind and Life Institute, based in Boulder, CO, is a non-profit organization dedicated to creating a working collaboration and research partnership between modern science and Buddhism and other contemplative traditions to better understand the nature of reality and investigating the mind.
